    Epitaxial Bi2FeCrO6 Multiferroic Thin Films

    We present here experimental results obtained on Bi2FeCrO6 (BFCO) epitaxial films deposited by laser ablation directly on SrTiO3 substrates. It has been theoretically predicted, by Baettig and Spaldin, using first-principles density functional theory that BFCO is ferrimagnetic (with a magnetic moment of 2 Bohr magneton per formula unit) and ferroelectric (with a polarization of ~80 microC/cm2 at 0K). The crystal structure has been investigated using X-ray diffraction which shows that the films are epitaxial with a high crystallinity and have a degree of orientation depending of the deposition conditions and that is determined by the substrate crystal structure. Chemical analysis carried out by X-ray Microanalysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) indicates the correct cationic stoichiometry in the BFCO layer, namely (Bi:Fe:Cr = 2:1:1). XPS depth profiling revealed that the oxidation state of Fe and Cr ions in the film remains 3+ throughout the film thickness and that both Fe and Cr ions are homogeneously distributed throughout the depth. Cross-section high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images together with selected area electron diffraction confirm the crystalline quality of the epitaxial BFCO films with no identifiable foreign phase or inclusion. The multiferroic character of BFCO is proven by ferroelectric and magnetic measurements showing that the films exhibit ferroelectric and magnetic hysteresis at room temperature. In addition, local piezoelectric measurements carried out using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) show the presence of ferroelectric domains and their switching at the sub-micron scale.Comment: Accepted for publication in Philosophical Magazine Letter

    Environmental impact of early palaeometallurgy: pollen and geochemical analysis

    International audienceInterdisciplinary research was carried out in mid-level mountain areas in France with the aim of documenting historical mining and smelting activities by means of pollen and geochemical analyses. These investigations were made on cores collected in French peatlands in the Morvan (northern Massif Central), at Mont Lozère (southern Massif Central) and in the Basque Country (Pyrénées). Different periods of mining were recognised from Prehistory to modern times through the presence of anthropogenic lead in peat. Some of these were already known from archaeological dates or historical archives, especially for mediaeval and modern periods. However prehistoric ancient mining activities, as early as the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1700 b.c.), were also discovered. They had all led to modifications in plant cover, probably related in part to forest clearance necessary to supply energy for mining and smelting

    Selenium isotope evidence for progressive oxidation of the Neoproterozoic biosphere

    Neoproterozoic (1,000–542 Myr ago) Earth experienced profound environmental change, including ‘snowball’ glaciations, oxygenation and the appearance of animals. However, an integrated understanding of these events remains elusive, partly because proxies that track subtle oceanic or atmospheric redox trends are lacking. Here we utilize selenium (Se) isotopes as a tracer of Earth redox conditions. We find temporal trends towards lower δ82/76Se values in shales before and after all Neoproterozoic glaciations, which we interpret as incomplete reduction of Se oxyanions. Trends suggest that deep-ocean Se oxyanion concentrations increased because of progressive atmospheric and deep-ocean oxidation. Immediately after the Marinoan glaciation, higher δ82/76Se values superpose the general decline. This may indicate less oxic conditions with lower availability of oxyanions or increased bioproductivity along continental margins that captured heavy seawater δ82/76Se into buried organics. Overall, increased ocean oxidation and atmospheric O2 extended over at least 100 million years, setting the stage for early animal evolution

    Technology-assisted training of arm-hand skills in stroke: concepts on reacquisition of motor control and therapist guidelines for rehabilitation technology design

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is the purpose of this article to identify and review criteria that rehabilitation technology should meet in order to offer arm-hand training to stroke patients, based on recent principles of motor learning.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A literature search was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE (1997–2007).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One hundred and eighty seven scientific papers/book references were identified as being relevant. Rehabilitation approaches for upper limb training after stroke show to have shifted in the last decade from being analytical towards being focussed on environmentally contextual skill training (task-oriented training). Training programmes for enhancing motor skills use patient and goal-tailored exercise schedules and individual feedback on exercise performance. Therapist criteria for upper limb rehabilitation technology are suggested which are used to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a number of current technological systems.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This review shows that technology for supporting upper limb training after stroke needs to align with the evolution in rehabilitation training approaches of the last decade. A major challenge for related technological developments is to provide engaging patient-tailored task oriented arm-hand training in natural environments with patient-tailored feedback to support (re) learning of motor skills.</p

    The LegoPress: A Rehabilitation, Performance Assessment and Training Device Mechanical Design and Control

    In this paper we present the LegoPress, a simple and cost-effective robotic device intended to be used for leg-press movements in rehabilitation and training. Basic adjustments can be done on the sitting position so as to maximize comfort and adapt the posture of the user depending on the desired training. The LegoPress has two motorized axes independently acting on the two legs. By means of force sensors positioned at the pedal level, a precise monitoring is possible. The force sensor is as well used to improve the impedance control, which enables to reproduce various behaviors.
